5 Easy Ways To Use Less Plastic This Week

If you're wondering how to use less plastic, you've come to the right place! Here at Farndon Fields, we’re always trying to work out how we can reduce our own plastic waste as well as that of our customers.

The UK produces 3.7 million tonnes of plastic waste every year and there are no accurate figures on how much of this is being recycled. So our thinking is, why not try to reduce plastic consumption as a whole?

Going plastic-free may seem overwhelming at the best of times, but small changes and a few daily swaps could make big differences.

To make things simpler for you, we’ve put together 5 ways you can reduce your plastic consumption this week:

1. Take your own lunchbox for takeaway food

Now, this may feel a little strange at first, but most places will happily put your food into your own containers. At Farndon Fields, our butchers will happily package fresh meat from the counter and place in your own takeaway boxes. The same goes for the sandwiches and cakes in our deli. Just bring your own box and we can place straight in! Couldn’t be easier.

2. Carry a reusable water bottle

We all lead busy lives and there's nothing more important than staying hydrated. However, plastic water bottles are a huge contributor to plastic waste. So reduce your plastic usage this week by carrying a reusable water bottle. Our top tip is to carry an empty bottle to avoid being weighed down whilst you’re on the go and then refill when you need at restaurants, cafes or water fountains. Easy peasy.

3. Buy loose fruit and veg

Buying loose fruit and vegetables is a great way of reducing plastic packaging, however, when buying more than one item reusable cotton produce bags will help keep your basket under control. Reusable produce bags are an eco-friendly way of shopping without having your apples rolling away before you get the chance to pay!

4. Avoid using plastic straws

Now this one may take a little bit of practice, some nifty bars and restaurants are quick to plonk a plastic straw straight in your drink. So simply ask when ordering to skip the straw. There are tons of reusable alternatives if you simply can't go without a straw, in the Farmers Kitchen we have replaced our plastic straws with paper ones which we will happily provide if you ask nicely.

5. Remember your reusable shopping bags

Everyone knows this by now, but one of the top reasons people don't use their own bags is they forget to bring them. Stash them in your car, bag, and pockets so you don’t forget! As well as reducing plastic waste you can also smugly decline a bag at any checkout.

There you have it, 5 easy ways to use less plastic this week! Now, we do hold our hands up and admit that we aren’t perfect and Farndon Fields is not plastic-free. Some of our products do come pre-packaged, but we are working towards finding alternative solutions. After all, small actions can make a big difference.
